  February 27, 2005...
I've made it to Checotah, Oklahoma where I've stopped to spend the night. I picked this load up at Amarillo, Texas at a drop yard. The load is going to Atlanta, Georgia. Before my fleet manager went home Friday afternoon, she sent a message to me saying that they would likely have me bring it to the Elm Springs, Arkansas yard since I'm due home for a few days off. I've been out about a month or so -- I've sort of lost track of how long I've been gone. I'm hoping I don't have to deliver the load to Atlanta -- I'm ready for a few days off and away from the truck.

I've purchased a new domain name and website that will be called PodcastPromos.Com. I also purchased podcastpromo.com without the "s" on the end that will point to the same website. My vision is to set up a website that will function as a podcast promo link exchange where people can get together and exchange promos to be played in each others shows. Hopefully I can set this up fairly quickly once I get some time to sit down and start working on it.

Another thing I've been looking into is getting a better microphone for higher-quality audio input. For now I've settled on a Plantronics USB DSP-500 microphone/headset. A couple of people have told me that the microphone sounds amazingly good, so we will see. I would really like to move towards more professional-level equipment, but doing it from here in the truck introduces several problems. First there's the problem of trying to power everything from the 300 watt DC to AC power inverter -- it seems to introduce a lot of noise into microphones.
Secondly, there's the issue of limited space. It becomes a pain if I have to carry around too much bulky equipment.

Tom talks about the raging debate between the traditional radio people who feel threatened by podcasting and are trying to talk it down versus the people who see the handwriting on the wall, the controversy around the monetization of podcasts, and describes how traditional broadcast radio and the traditional "shotgun" approach to advertising is in big trouble, comparing it to a sinking Titanic as the globalized market shatters into a million pieces. I also researched microphone options today and after receiving high product praise from a couple of people I trust I am going to buy a Plantronics USB DSP-500 headset/microphone to do the podcast with.   February 23, 2005...

I unloaded early this morning at Rancho Cucamonga, California, which is near Ontario, California, both in the greater Los Angeles area. I decided to go ahead and spend the night here and wait until tomorrow to worry about picking up another load so that I could catch up on hours with my driver log book.

I spent last night at Victorville, California. Try as I might, I was unable to go to sleep so I finally just gave up on the idea. There's nothing worse than knowing you need to sleep, but not feeling the least bit tired or drowsy.

I spent most of the afternoon sleeping. A friend that lives out here came and picked me up this evening at the truck stop and we went to a nearby restaurant for dinner and to catch up on conversation.

I just spent some time simplifying my Home page. It was far too complicated and confusing. I put a lot of the individual links into simple categories on a separate "Tom's Stuff" page. The "What's New" page can easily serve as a site index. A substantial amount of my website traffic is driven directly from search engines to internal pages anyway so there's really no need to confuse people with so many links on the home page. I'll likely think of ways I can simplify it further.

Tom talks about slow Flying J WiFi, the dangers of having a shared hard drive on public WiFi networks, recommends Core FTP Lite, discusses the General Motors podcast, says that the Terry Shivo case will curse the state of Florida if the state puts her to death, talks about the liberal so-called progressive "poverty pimps" on the left, the potential Bird Flu epidemic, how secret resentment and judgement opens us up to the dark side and weakens our immune systems, how we have great technology but are ignorant about the mind, recommends a meditation to use, and talks about a Washington, D.C. school that brought in 500 cats into the cafeteria to be spayed and nuetered over the weekend and now has parents outraged. The links for today's show are:

http://www.audiographics.com/agd/s1022105.htm -- A blogged negative article about podcasting trying to reassure professional radio broadcasters that podcasting is only a passing fad and poses no danger to them -- yeah, right. I posted the following feedback comment that likely won't ever see the light of day.

"You come across as perhaps a bit angry and bitter that the media production and delivery
landscape is once again changing. We are in the early stages of an absolute revolution in
the way content is created and delivered. I drive a truck over-the-road and through the
magic of my laptop's Sprint PCS "Merlin" card I'm able to keep my MP3 player full of fresh
content to listen to every day as I'm driving, which is a LOT of content. One of the
wonderful things about podcasting is that it allows people to say what they REALLY think.
Traditional broadcasters, especially these days, are forced to tow a corporate line and be
"entertaining" as a way to disguise the fact that they aren't really communicating anything
meaningful. I am really able to connect to the podcasters I'm listening to. Sure, it's
amatuer and the production values are lacking -- that gives it a lot of it's charm. Mark my
words, the revolution has just started. The effects of it 5 or 10 years down the road can
only be imagined at this point. I dream of the day when fast wireless Internet blankets
every square inch of the landscape, where virtually every audio and video playback device
has it's own broadband Internet connection. Once that happens, and it's not that far off,
the revolution will really take off. Entire industries have been displaced by the Internet
and the globalized nature of our world, and this phenomonon is moving into the service
sector as well. Entire industries are now dissappearing seemingly overnight, and the speed
of this change will do nothing but continue to accellerate."

http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0205/208719.html -- An article about a Washington, D.C. school that brought in 500 stray cats to be spayed and nuetered over the weekend IN THE SCHOOL'S CAFETERIA -- as soon as the parents heard about it they were rightfully outraged and are demanding that the school be professionally cleaned. This is a typical liberal, progressive pagan hair-brained idea.

It was bitterly cold and somewhat windy earlier in Pennsylvania. Right now I've stopped to sleep at Wytheville, Virginia. It's somewhat warmer here, but still cold. At least there isn't any wind to speak of.

I've made it to Kennesaw, Georgia, a northern suburb of Atlanta, Georgia where I've dropped my trailer. Unfortunately the warehouse I dropped the load in doesn't have any empty trailers available, so I'll have to wait until sometime Wednesday to get one.

Peter Yorke from www.downloadradio.org had heard one of my podcasts and was wanting to know if I'd be interested in setting up a Bittorrent feed for my podcast. Of course I thought that was a wonderful idea, since it will give me a bit more exposure as well as help mitigate the bandwidth consumption issue.

I've gone sort of podcast crazy the past few days -- this is the third night in a row that I'll be posting another podcast. I'm hoping to be able to generate more frequent podcasts that are a bit shorter in length. Podcasting is a whole lot of fun. I listen to podcasts I've downloaded from the Internet almost exclusively all day long every day on my MP3 player, and it's fun to contribute back material for other people to listen to.

It's looking like I'll likely be stuck here for the entire weekend. Edwardsville, Illinois is a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri.

I purchased and downloaded a new piece of computer software called "Mixcast Live" that's designed specifically to enable "live" recording of Podcast MP3 files. I got it from http://mixcastlive.com. It's really quite a neat piece of software. The cost was a very reasonable $39 dollars.

After I unloaded at Kennesaw, Georgia, they had me deadhead to Chattanooga, Tennessee to pick up a loaded trailer that was parked at the Mack Truck dealership there and drop off my empty trailer. Apparently one of our trucks was in the shop there and the load needed to get delivered. The load came to Waco, Texas.

I made it here to Waco, Texas late last night/early this morning. I'm now picking up another pre-loaded trailer here at Waco, Texas that delivers to Hazleton, Pennsylvania.

I'm feeling much better than I was. It's taken me a few days to get over whatever it was that I've had. I haven't been pushing myself at all. It's stupid to try to push yourself when you are sick and I won't do it.

  February 3, 2005...
February 3, 2004 -- I came back to work on January 31st. I took a load from the yard at Elm Springs, Arkansas to near Allentown, Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, I started coming down with something. By late Tuesday evening I was experiencing chills which with me is always a good indication I've developed a fever. Fortunately I carry Eurethromycin with me courtesy of the online Mexican pharmacy www.safemeds.com so I went ahead and started taking it immediately. I'm feeling much better now, though my chest is still fairly sore. Fortunately I'm not experiencing nearly as much sinus drainage.

Right now I'm east of Knoxville, TN on my way to deliver a load at Kennesaw, Georgia tomorrow.

By the way, the furnace repair guy finally deposited the check I gave him after carrying it around for almost a month. The back of the check shows that it wasn't deposited until late in January. The check was written late in December.
